Learning About Wheat~Field Trip to the Wheat Field

Our class visited the wheat field that is down the road from our school.
We took a walk to the field to learn more about wheat and how it grows and is harvested.
One side of the field was already harvested.
We learned about the combines that cut the wheat. We discovered what it feels like, and the many ways we use wheat.
All of the children got a chance to feel the cut wheat stalks, hold the wheat, and investigate.

This is the half of the field that had not been harvested yet.
It was so neat to see and hear the wheat swaying back in forth in the wind.
The children found a perfect stalk of wheat to take home and share with their parents. They also wanted to tell them what they learned today.

We found a bunch of long stems of wheat that had been cut, but were laying on the ground.
We took them back to the classroom. We learned more about the different parts of the wheat stalk by looking at books and online.

We found little kernels inside the head of the wheat.
We compared them to the size of a popcorn kernel. They were definitely smaller.

Ms. Ashley taught us about each part of the wheat. We also watched a video online about how they mill the wheat. What a unique opportunity to learn about where our food comes from.
We love that learning can take place inside and outside of the classroom!

We also learned about how wind works
The children blew pom pom balls with a straw similar to how wind blows the wheat
